We had the most magical weekend in San Diego with our kids. We were living in Phoenix at the time so we took a labor day weekend getaway to San Diego. San Diego is just a five hour drive from Phoenix. I picked Matt up from work and we drove straight to San Diego. By we driving straight I mean Matt drove and I sat next to him for moral support (if someone sleeping next to you counts as moral support). He likes to drive and I don’t so it works out pretty well. Who drives in your home?
Since Matt grew up in California and we still have extended family there I feel like it’s a place we will always go back to. I don’t feel the need to see everything. It was a relaxing weekend but we still did a lot and there are still things in San Diego I want to do when we go back.
First, we knew we didn’t need to go to the San Diego Zoo for this trip. Matt and I have both been to the San Diego Zoo. We were “zooed out” from living in St. Louis where the zoo is free and having recently been to the amazing Omaha Zoo. I want to see Mission Beach in San Diego. According to another hotel guest, “Mission Beach is the most crowded beach that he’s been to.” We found some less crowded beaches for this trip. At some point I want to see large beach crowds. Matt told me the most crowded beach he’s seen was in Waikiki Beach in Hawaii.
After looking through these photos and thinking about everything we did, I wanted to nail down what made this trip magical for me. I wanted to know so that I can recreate it in the future. I’m glad that this trip wasn’t out of the country because we definitely couldn’t go out of the country frequently. Could this magical type of weekend be recreated in a cold location or was the fact that this trip was in Southern California where temperatures are temperate all of the time be the key?
A laid-back, intimate beach wedding just reaffirmed to me that I love beach people. They are so easy going and know how to have a good time. I was deeply honored to photograph this wedding. Aside from the officiant, only family members were present at the wedding. Two families became one. What better way to get to know one family than to meet the entire family. This part of Atlantic beach has so much history for the bride. She grew up coming to this beach to visit her grandmother, her cousin got married here and her parents have lived here as well.
These photos were taken in the middle of a hot day. The family were troopers taken photos in the hot sun. It was a gorgeous beach wedding. The bride spent the night with her crew at the Sawgrass Marriott Resort. It’s a beautiful hotel and the perfect place to relax and enjoy oneself before the big day. Everyone looked stunning and the bride was glowing. Their children and nephews were a part of the big day- which made it extra special.
After the wedding, they were going to have a family barbecue and celebrate the following days at Disney World. What better way to celebrate than with the most important people in their lives.ClickClick Continue after the jump to see more photos from this beach ceremony.
I told mom she looked like a beautiful mermaid at the beach for these maternity photos. These maternity portraits were taken at Washington Oak Garden State Park.
Even though these were taken in the summer there were still beautiful flowers. Look at the height of the roses compared to the children. They are the tallest roses I’ve ever seen. The weather played with us all day. I started the session saying- there is a chance we are going to get rained out and we will have to reschedule. Luckily we didn’t have to reschedule, it did sprinkle on us the entire time. The benefit of the rain was that it kept the summer temperatures down. The rain got heavier as we moved to the beach. You can tell their was a storm rolling in at the end of the session. As I drove away it really started to pour. We were so happy to not reschedule because the baby came early. A baby girl came just a little over a week after these photos were taken!
Isn’t this mama to be beautiful? She looked like a gorgeous mermaid at the beach. I can’t wait to show everyone how cute the little girl is that was inside. She is going to be so loved by her two big brothers. The grandparents were along for the photo-session and helped entertain the boys while these portraits were taken. The boys did great though- there is so much room to explore at the state park. It was helpful to have an extra sets of hands to transition between the two locations.
While the gardens and beach are part of the same park it’s best to drive between the two locations. A complete photo-session could be done at either the gardens or the beach.
There is so much anticipation (excitement and worry) on the arrival of a new little one. Every birth is such a miracle and I feel privileged to take a small part in telling part of the families story.
